Surfer on Blue Ocean Wave Example of Balance in Life

So often we are encouraged to be mindful and to create balance in our lives: in our relationships, with our time, with our priorities, between work, play, love, commitments, etc.. We are encouraged to look at the balance sheet, the balance of power, to have a balanced body.

I think most of us have a very hard time achieving this “balance” in any consistent way. We might have it briefly but it seems to disappear, to get lost, to evade us, and we wonder why we keep making the same mistakes, the wrong choices, why we keep failing at achieving something that seems like it should be so simple. Balance? How hard can it be?

The answer is: Very, very hard, and the reason can be traced to the word itself.

Think about going to the doctor and getting weighed on one of those scales where the nurse moves the little marker until the scale comes into balance to indicate your weight. It is exact to the pound. Balance is a very small window and anything on either side of it tips it in one direction or another.

We tell ourselves these stories, or we believe the stories that we are told, that have us aspiring to achieve perfection, balance, to live in a tiny space in which any deviation causes a feeling of disappointment, frustration, criticism, failure or loss. Maybe balance should be less a goal than an awareness of a state that is neither good nor bad.

Balance is one aspect of a continuum. When we catch ourselves in a moment when all of the elements of life seem to converge perfectly in that place of center, that is certainly a rare thing and is worth noting but maybe life is more interesting, more challenging, and even more engaging when we take the pressure off ourselves to live in that small space and instead allow ourselves to ride the waves of the polarities.

We can bring awareness to whether those waves bring us closer to center or further away and, by figuring that out, we learn about ourselves and others, what we love and what we hate and, in short, who we are and who we strive to become.

When we allow ourselves to surf the ocean of life from a place of less pressure and greater freedom, we can enjoy more of the opportunities that life throws our way with less attachment and less self-criticism.

Letting go of the impossible goal of always living in “balance” will, amazingly, expand the spaciousness of what we perceive balance to be.

Write more, thats all I have to say. Literally, it seems as though you relied on the video to make your point. You definitely know what youre talking about, why throw away your intelligence on just posting videos to your blog when you could be giving us something informative to read?

    • dr_dyan

I will:-) You can also follow me on Instagram @drdyanhj if you would like to see more content on a more regular basis. I post pics and videos with some writing many times per week!

Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this site.
It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very hard to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and visual appeal.
I must say you’ve done a awesome job with this. Additionally, the blog loads very quick for me on Firefox.
    Excellent Blog!

    • dr_dyan

That is great to hear! I spent well over a year working with my team to achieve the harmony you are talking about. I really wanted to create something that is visually appealing and that makes the user feel cared for, inspired, and is easy to use. My designer, Rachel Dunham, and my developer, Alchemy + Aim, were a dream to work with and they worked very hard to help me reach these goals. Thanks for your wonderful feedback!

all the time i used to read smaller content which also clear their motive, and that is also happening with this piece of writing which I am reading now.

Great blog! Do you have any tips for aspiring writers? I’m planning to start my own site soon but I’m a little lost
on everything. Would you recommend starting with a
free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that
I’m totally overwhelmed .. Any ideas? Thank you!

    • dr_dyan

Hi! I am so glad you like the blog and I am flattered that my writing inspired you enough to ask my opinion!
I am honestly not the most tech savvy person so I can totally relate to feeling overwhelmed by all of the options out there! I can only really share with you my own process and for me, WordPress is working great. I had someone help me with web design and development (You can find them through the site credits in my footer, if you are interested), but as far as the platform, I am finding WP to be very easy to use. That is really important to me because I want to focus on content and making blogs and resources accessible to users and I don’t want to spend a lot of time learning the tech side. If you want to spend more time on your writing then you might also like the WP platform for similar reasons.
      I hope this is helpful!

If you like my blog, you can sign up for my newsletter if you haven’t already. I am going to post a new blog probably next week so if you sign up you will get a notification.
      Thanks again for your comments!

What’s up colleagues, how is everything, and what you wish for to say concerning this paragraph, in my
view its truly amazing in support of me.

  • Alana

Hi there! I understand this is sort of off-topic however
I had to ask. Does operating a well-established website such as yours
take a massive amount work? I am completely new to running a blog however I do write in my diary
every day. I’d like to start a blog so I can share my personal experience and feelings online.
Please let me know if you have any kind of recommendations or tips for brand new aspiring blog owners.
    Appreciate it!

    • dr_dyan

HI Alanna! How great that you are inspired to start a blog.
I have put a lot into developing my website and, as you have seen, I know it is very extensive. I know that there are some simple and easy to maintain ways to create a blog that don’t require so much energy. I think the amount of work and time that you would put in really depends on how much time you want to put in, how often you post, and a lot of other factors.
In general, the best tip that I can give is that I feel that when we do things that we really love and that come from a place of our deepest core values, even things that require a lot of effort don’t feel like “work” because it is the heart that drives them.
I hope this is helpful. Best of luck!
